What was your first job (and how much did it pay)? My first job was when I was 15 years old working at a local pharmacy in Corbridge. I was mainly on the shop floor but got to do some training about over the counter drugs which I found really interesting. I was on minimum wage at that time at £5 per hour.

What is the best advice or support you’ve been given in business? See everyone as a teacher and never stop learning from others. One of my favourite quotes that really struck a chord with me is: "here is no such thing as a 'self-made' man (or woman). We are made up of thousands of others. Everyone who has ever done a kind deed for us, or spoken one word of encouragement to us, has entered into the make-up of our character and of our thoughts, as well as our success." You don’t have to know everything, that’s how we learn. Asking for help is a strength rather than a weakness.

What are the main changes you’ve seen in your business/sector, and what are the challenges you’re facing? The economic climate has played a huge part in so many ways and I would certainly say that is also contributing to the wedding industry, affecting couples and how much they want to, and can, spend. I have found that since Covid, everything has changed. That along with the increased competition in the area, you need to be able to be fresh and relevant, continuously adding something new and different to stand out from the crowd.

What would your dream job be? I genuinely love what I do now, but I have always had a passion for property development and design. I guess that’s how Northside Farm came about as a business as we developed our old derelict barn, courtyard and Gin Gang on our working farm into a rustic wedding venue. I commissioned the landscaping and the creation of the glamping site, along with the four fairytale cottage accommodation so it’s the best of both worlds for me. Combining a passion for design and development with a vision and a good business head I think has been key.

What advice would you give to someone starting out a career in your sector? It depends on which part as my job is so varied and the wedding industry is so vast. The ‘industry’ or sector covers so many bases from stylist to DJ to florists and dress designers. I would say to anyone wanting to enter the wedding sector is to find your passion and what you are good at. The main challenge really is being able to forward plan, have a clear view of a workable pipeline and do your research.

What makes the North East a good place to do business? Being born and bred in Northumberland, it is the only place I could ever imagine raising my children and running a business in. It has so much to offer from coast to country so for me, there was never a need to go anywhere else when we have so much on offer right on our doorstep. We are also passionate about always using local suppliers and independent businesses for all of our events and hold regular open days and showcasing events so that they can also increase their business.

How important is it for business to play a role in society? SMEs really are the backbone of the country and being a small family run business, we have been creating jobs since we opened in 2016 which is vital especially for the rural community in parts of Northumberland. We started out as a rural diversification project that has grown and created employment as well as unique offerings in a relatively short space of time.

Outside of work, what are you really good at? Besides being a taxi for my kids, I'm really creative so I paint, draw and write a lot to wind down. Having a busy business with long hours, in my downtime I like the simple life - enjoying nature, walking the dog on the beach but what's most important to me is just being present and in the moment. I am always trying to learn new things and at the moment, I am researching a lot into astrology so maybe one day I can say I am really good at that.

Who would play you in a film about your life? I like Anne Hathaway and Julia Roberts both for the way they hold themselves together and are well respected. Julia seems to have the work-life balance right with her children and she seems very authentic which is important to me.
