EV battery firm Altilium appoints new managing director

David Cartwright is the new managing director of Altilium

A Devon-based electric vehicle battery recycling business that is building a major plant in Teesside has appointed a new managing director.

David Cartwright will be responsible for driving Altilium's next phase of growth, the company said, including the scale-up of its EV battery recycling operations in Britain.

He has 40 years’ experience in the chemicals industry, mostly recently at Kolmar Group, heading up the company's Asian headquarters in Singapore. Before that he held senior commercial roles at both BP and Ineos in the UK.

“I am thrilled to join Altilium at such an exciting time and to continue my journey from trading petrochemicals to advocating for sustainable solutions," said Mr Cartwright.

"The EV revolution is here, and recycling is critical to its sustainability. I look forward to working with the impressive Altilium team, helping to drive continued innovation and ensure that we not only meet the demand for clean energy but also minimise environmental harm in the process.”

The announcement comes less than two months after Altilium announced it had secured US$5m (£4m) from Japanese investment group Marubeni Corporation to support the next stage of development for its planned Teesside facility.

The plant will have the capacity to process scrap from more than 150,000 EVs a year (50,000 tonnes of black mass), producing 30,000 tonnes of cathode active material – a key component of new batteries.

The money raised in the company's latest funding round will be used to carry out detailed engineering studies, for land acquisition, planning and permitting, as well as strengthening of the leadership team, according to Altilium.

Mr Cartwright will initially be based in Devon, before transitioning to the North East as work around the ACT4 facility ramps up.

Christian Marson, chief operating officer of Altilium, said Mr Cartwright's "deep commercial expertise" would be "invaluable" for driving the company's next phase of growth.
